In 2000, the California Legislature created new laws authorizing non-lawyers such as Legal Document Assistants and Unlawful Detainer Assistants, to prepare legal documents for Pro Per/Pro Se litigants (individuals who represent themselves in court). Legal Document Assistants and Unlawful Detainer Assistants can assist Pro Per/Pro Se litigants in the completion, filing, and service of the forms under their direction.
